Josh collaborated with an Italian team renowned for producing some of the best socks in the world and using one of the most modern knitting machines in the world. The goal was to create a knitted sock that wouldn't slip down, yet whose combination of smooth and rough surface would help airflow move more efficiently around the calf.
The result is a sock whose aerodynamic properties match those of ribbed Lycra-cuffed socks, while retaining all the qualities you expect from a quality cycling sock.
After learning what real advantage aerodynamic socks can provide, we introduced our everyday-useAero Sock. We received many great reviews about their comfort, but we also received many requests to create a sock that would be even more aerodynamic and make the most of the UCI limit.
So we extended the sock cuff to19.5 cm, thereby precisely reaching the UCI maximum limit for most cyclists.
Technology
Special knitting equipment allows producing a sock with a smooth front surface in the area where airflow travels in a laminar manner. Also used are3 rows of turbulence-creating strips, starting just before the airflow separation zone.
These turbulence strips create small vortices in the boundary air layer that give the airflow extra energy and help it stay attached to the leg surface longer.
Greater airflow attachment means a smaller pressure turbulence zone behind the leg. Smaller turbulence zone = lower air resistance.
Saves 4–8 W of air resistance, compared to standard socks, and the result matches socks with a similar-height ribbed Lycra surface.
Q-Skin material
SILCA Aero Socksare made fromQ-Skin– a silver ion-enriched polyamide known for its antibacterial and odor-reducing properties.
More importantly, this material offers greater softness and better moisture control than many other yarns commonly used in cycling sock production.
