VIDEO RECORDING UPDATES

The updated 'X Processor 5' most significantly enhances the new model's video recording capabilities. This means it is now possible to record 4K/60 4:2:2 10-bit internal video and 6.2K video with an open gate (3:2 format). 'Fujifilm' has also included the F-Log2 color profile, providing users with an additional 'Fujifilm'-rated latitude, allowing for grading at a base ISO of 1250. If you wish to use an external HDMI recording device, the camera can now output 'ProRes RAW' or 'Blackmagic RAW' if desired. If you think this camera is starting to look like a mini X-H2, then you are on the right track. The X-S20 is compatible with that camera's cooling fan, the FAN-001, which easily screws onto the back of the X-S20. This model also features a new headphone jack, so a USB-C to 3.5 mm adapter is no longer needed. Continuous recording duration is somewhat problematic – when 'Fujifilm' tested the camera at 25°C, it only operated for 36 minutes in the demanding 6.2K mode. When the FAN-001 is attached, the operating time more than doubles – up to 78 minutes. The new '1080/60P LP' mode is designed to make it easier for the camera to record for longer periods. Using a 1.29x crop, thus a smaller portion of the image sensor, the processor can rest from binning or line skipping; in this mode, it can record for 32 minutes in 40°C heat or 78 minutes when the FAN-001 is installed.

VLOG MODE AND UAC WEBCAM

Conveniently positioned on the mode selection dial, the 'Vlog' mode provides the 'Fujifilm' system with a new video recording interface. It is designed to make the work of typical types of content creators simple and accessible. Tap the Vlog button on the touchscreen, and you get six quick-access buttons for such common functions as stabilization, auto timer, eye/face detection, product priority mode (which causes autofocus to lock onto objects held near the lens), high-speed recording toggle, and background defocus mode (which opens the lens to its maximum aperture). The X-S20 also indicates to the user that recording is in progress with a red frame around the LCD viewfinder screen or a green frame if recording at high speed. If you are not a 'YouTuber' but more of a 'Twitch' streamer, the X-S20 can be used as an impressive webcam. Using the USB-C port, you can stream 4K/60p live from the camera. Unlike older 'Fujifilm' models, 'XWebcam' software is not necessary, as the X-S20 relies on the UAC standard.

AUTOFOCUS AND SUBJECT DETECTION IMPROVEMENTS

Photographers are also given additional assistance due to the faster X Processor 5 present in the X-S20 model. 'Fujifilm' claims to have added an improved autofocus algorithm, initially developed for the flagship X-H2S model, so moving subjects and especially smaller subjects should be captured more reliably. The X-S20 has also inherited the X-H2 family's subject detection modes. In PASM or custom modes, they can be selected individually. You can choose from animal, bird, car, motorcycle and bicycle, airplane, and train modes. If you are shooting in fully automatic mode, the camera will try to recognize and apply the appropriate mode based on the subject in the frame.

BODY AND CONTROLS

The 'Fujifilm X-S20' is hardly a flashy camera, as a subdued style has been chosen, focusing primarily on functionality rather than visual appeal. A compact size, DSLR-style grip, and dual control dials are available – it looks like a mid-range camera. Accordingly, the body's functional accents have been adapted. Compared to its predecessor, many control elements have been enlarged – larger dials and more prominent buttons, but the satisfyingly clicky rear controller remains. The resolution of the articulating touchscreen has increased slightly, while the electronic viewfinder with a small OLED panel remains the same as the X-S10. 'Fujifilm' clearly aimed to reinforce everything photographers liked about the X-S10, including the port selection. It has USB-C with power delivery for charging, micro HDMI, and a 2.5 mm microphone jack, which can also be used to connect a wired shutter release. The grip houses a completely new 3.5 mm headphone jack. X-S10 users needed to use a USB-C to 3.5 mm adapter, but X-S20 users can connect directly.

The Fujifilm XC 15-45mm F3.5-5.6 is a compact, convenient lens designed for X-mount cameras with APS-C sensors. The 23 – 69 mm equivalent focal length, covering from relatively wide-angle to short telephoto, and a lightweight construction – 136 g – make it convenient to carry. Thanks to the electronic zoom function, this model features smooth and precise zooming across the entire range; by rotating the zoom ring, you simply select the desired speed, and then use the camera. The XC 15-45mm optical construction consists of 10 elements in 9 groups, of which 3 are aspherical and 2 are extra-low dispersion, helping to ensure optimal image quality and sharpness. It is excellent for close-up photography, focusing at a minimum distance of 13 cm. The lens has image stabilization up to 3 shutter steps, as well as a quietly operating autofocus. The maximum aperture varies from f/3.5 to f/5.6 depending on the focal length, and the minimum aperture is f/22.
