Information transmitted in the form of light provides many functions and advantages. _x000D_\n_x000D_\nExcellent transmission distance_x000D_\nIt is not unusual for optical systems to go more than 100 kilometers (km) or about 62 miles. _x000D_\n_x000D_\nEnhanced security_x000D_\nIt is impossible to remotely detect a signal transmitted over a fiber optic cable. The only way to do so is to actually access the optical fiber itself. As a result, fiber optics is particularly attractive to government agencies, banks, and other companies with major security concerns._x000D_\n_x000D_\nNo metal components_x000D_\nFiber optic cable can be installed in locations with electromagnetic interference (EMI). This includes areas around utility lines, power lines, and railway tracks. Fiber optics is also ideal in areas with a high incidence of lightning strikes.
