The game consists of three consecutive chapters that proceed similarly. At the very beginning of a chapter, cards are dealt in a specific layout, some face-up and some face-down. Then players take turns playing until one draws the last card or meets one of the game-ending conditions.

In turn, we can perform one of two actions:

• Take a chapter card from the available (uncovered) cards in the layout. Then we can pay its possible cost, play and use its effect, or discard the card to gain coins.
• Take a stronghold tile. After paying its cost, we place the stronghold on the main board in the region matching the purchased tile and use its effects.

Depending on the suit, cards provide various bonuses. Gray symbolizes skills used to pay for cards and tiles, yellow provides coins, blue allows movement on the ring-seeking track where you race against an opponent, green allows forming alliances with Middle-earth races, and red allows deploying units. The final chapter also includes special purple cards with powerful effects.

A player wins immediately upon fulfilling one of the victory conditions:

• They complete the ring quest (Sauron must catch Frodo and Sam, who in turn are trying to reach the volcano).
• They ally with six Middle-earth races by collecting their green cards.
• They conquer Middle-earth, meaning they are present in each of the seven regions (due to a stronghold or at least one unit).

If no player fulfills any victory condition by the end of the third chapter, the player who controls the most Middle-earth regions wins.

Why will you like this game?

• The struggle between good and evil in the world created by J.R.R. Tolkien is one of the most recognizable fantasy stories. It has sparked the imagination of readers and other cultural audiences for years, making it a particularly appealing theme for a board game about the clash of opposing forces.
• Based on the rules of 7 Wonders: Duel, the game offers refined two-player mechanics that allow us to expertly manage the opponent's actions. It is an engaging, strategic game where every decision we make matters for the final outcome.
• Duel for Middle-earth introduces completely new mechanics that will present an interesting challenge even to veterans of two-player 7 Wonders. Instead of pushing along a military track, we deal with a race, and a special board with a map elevates the competition to a whole new level.
