On July 11, 1899, at 10 a.m., the "Union Pacific Express" departs from Folsom, New Mexico, with 47 passengers. Moments later, gunshots and hurried footsteps are heard on the train roof. Heavily armed bandits climbed aboard to rob honest citizens of their wallets and treasures. Will they succeed in stealing the "Nice Valley Coal Company" weekly payroll suitcase guarded by Sheriff Samuel Ford? Or will the bandits hinder each other more than the sheriff, since only the richest of them can win? In the game Colt Express, you become a bandit, robbing a train together with other criminals. Your goal is to become the richest outlaw of the Wild West. The game consists of five rounds, and each round has two phases: Phase 1: Planning – Each player places 2–5 action cards into a common pile, which, depending on the round, are played face-up or face-down. Instead of playing a card, a player may draw three cards from their deck. Phase 2: Robbery – Action cards are executed in the order they were played, but even the best plans can fail due to mistakes or unexpected actions. The game takes place on a 3D train, where bandits can move from one car to another, run on the roof, punch and shoot at opponents, rob passengers, or lure the sheriff out of his position. The train has as many cars as there are players, and in each car at the start of the game, gems, loot bags, or suitcases are placed. Each player starts the round with six cards in hand, and each card indicates an action. At the beginning of the round, a round card is revealed, indicating how many cards will be played, whether they will be face-up or face-down, played one by one or in pairs, as well as what special rule will take effect at the end of the round. You can take loot, gems, or suitcases by playing a Steal card while in the car where one of these items is located. Since all bandits are after the same loot, you will have to move, punch, and shoot to remove opponents from your path. You can only punch another bandit if you are in the same car. A bandit who receives a punch drops one of the collected loot items and is pushed to an adjacent car. Each character has a unique special ability, such as starting the round with an extra card, playing the first card face-down, or after punching another bandit, taking their dropped loot bag. You can shoot at a bandit in an adjacent car or, while on the train roof, at any visible opponent. When you shoot at another player, you pass them one of your six bullet cards. It is shuffled into the opponent's deck and may become a useless card in hand in the future, forcing the player to draw cards instead of taking an action. If the sheriff ends up in the same car as you, he will also gladly hand you a bullet. At the end of the game, the player who fired the most bullets receives a $1,000 Pliurpa bonus, and the winner is the one who collected the most valuable loot.
